Art and religion in the secular city The diversity of cultures and religions characterises the life of many modern cities. They occupy space in city life in very different forms, and their presence and visibility also vary greatly. In addition, with all forms of interreligiousness and interculturality, many of these groups live separately. EASTERN MUNICH, the public intervention for the Long Night of Munich Museums in October 2019, has made this diversity and difference visible using the example of projected floor plans of sacred rooms and buildings of the monotheistic religions. The floor plans show not only the respective cultural characteristics, but also their political significance within the cityscape. Such artistic interventions in public space can make borders visible, break them down at the same time, but also show their (political) construction and fragility. The spaces of experience and confrontation that can unfold through art open up new perspectives on everyday life in the modern city and at the same time open up new levels of reflection and conversation. Especially with regard to the interrelationship between art, religion and society, the potential of art to present the unspeakable and, through artistic intervention in the urban public sphere, to bring it back to the people of the city becomes apparent. Against this background, the evening will focus on the following topics:
– What is the role and significance of art in public space in the modern city? – To what extent is art, because of its structural similarities to religion, particularly suited to depicting even difficult social questions about culture and religion and making them tangible?
– What social and political perspectives result from these forms of artistic intervention?
